This episode features Najla Said, Trinity class of 1992. Najla is a writer, comedienne, and actress who has appeared in numerous plays, in film, and on television. The daughter of Edward Said, a professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and an advocate for Palestinians, Najla grew up as a Palestinian Lebanese American and attended the Chapin School before coming to Trinity. Najla graduated from Princeton University, studied acting in New York City and created a one-woman show, Palestine. In her new memoir, Looking for Palestine, Najla chronicles her journey to become an Arab American on her own terms. Najla was recorded speaking in the Hawley Chapel for Upper School Community Time. This episode features Jeff Orlowski the director, producer, and cinematographer of the Sundance Award-winning film, Chasing Ice, which has been screened at the White House, the United Nations, the United States Congress, on all seven continents as well as on a ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It has received over thirty awards from film festivals around the world. As founder of exposurelabs, a production company dedicated to making socially relevant films, Mr. Orlowski has served as director and producer of short film projects and commercial work. His work has aired on the National Geographic Channel, CNN and NBC and has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, and on NPR. He has traveled representing the Sundance Institute, President Obama's Committee for the Arts and Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Mr. Orlowski was recorded speaking with Lower and Upper School students during two separate presentations in the Hawley Chapel. This program is a combination of those two presentations. This episode features the memorial service for Douglas Tobin, a Classics Department teacher at Trinity since 1987. Mr. Tobin lost his brave fight against lymphoma on 26 August 2013. He was sixty-three years old. The memorial service was held on Wednesday, 11 September 2013 in the Hawley Chapel of Trinity School. The program runs for about eighty minutes and includes Head of School John Allman, Classics Department Head Donald Connor, Doug's best friend since childhood Dan Jusko, English Teacher Saul Isaacson, retired English Teacher Jane Mallison, Head of the Religion, Philosophy, and Ethics Department Andrew McCarron, Classics Teacher Kaori Miller, Classics Teacher William Pagonis, alumna and Dan Jusko's daughter Christina Rumpf ’00, and a letter from Doug's older brother Ron Tobin. Music at the memorial was performed by James Cifelli, on trumpet; Brian Glassman, on bass; Reid Jenkins ’10, on violin; and Pete McCann, on guitar.
